Utah law describes the historic state flag as a blue field bearing the former state seal design in the center. Official Utah library materials explain that the historic version incorporates the Great Seal of Utah, including the beehive, sego lilies, U.S. flags, the eagle, the years 1847 and 1896, and the word “Industry.” This gives the historic flag a much more seal-based and ceremonial appearance than the current simplified beehive design.
The historic Utah state flag is not simply an outdated product image or retired commercial variation. Utah law keeps it as a separately named historic state flag, allows its display on state-owned property for ceremonial purposes, and requires it to be displayed on Capitol Hill during the annual general session of the Legislature and on certain designated days. Because of that ongoing legal status, this version remains relevant for museums, state-history presentation, formal programs, educational use, and projects that specifically require the former official flag rather than the current one.

Historic Utah state flags are commonly used in museums, heritage programs, educational presentation, state-history display, civic exhibitions, and ceremonial settings that require the former official Utah design. They are also prepared for indoor presentation, framed or mounted historical display, formal institutional use, and selected outdoor programs where the project specifically calls for the historic version. Since Utah law now distinguishes between the current state flag and the historic state flag, version confirmation is especially useful for institutions, distributors, and resale programs.
